Alternative Energy

Sustainable Energy Resources for Consumers (SERC) is a federal grant for energy saving technologies that are not currently used in the federal Department of Energy (DOE) Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP). The objective of the SERC grant is to test and determine the effectiveness of new energy saving technologies so that they can either be used or avoided in future projects. The program is funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

Action for Boston Community Development, Inc. (ABCD) and ACTION Inc., both of Massachusetts, have used $3 million to install micro-combined heat and power systems in small (3-6 unit) multifamily settings (approximately 20 projects), Aerogel super insulation in three multifamily projects, and solar domestic hot water systems in low-income multifamily households (approximately 20 projects) throughout the state.
