How Heat Pumps Work:

Heat pumps provide both heating and cooling by transferring heat indoors during winter and outdoors during summer.

They run on electricity, efficiently moving heat to maintain your home’s comfort throughout the year, instead of burning fossil fuels directly.

Modern cold climate heat pumps can be up to 400% more efficient and offer effective heating even in temperatures as low as -15°F.

Advantages:

Cost

Heat pumps can save you money on energy bills compared to oil, propane, or electric baseboard systems.

Flexibility

Heat pumps, with or without ductwork, can regulate temperature for a single room or your entire home.

Comfort & Convenience

Heat pumps offer all-in-one comfort: heating, cooling, and dehumidification in a single system.

Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Heat pumps emit fewer greenhouse gases, making them a greener choice for the environment.

Considerations:

Efficiency First

It’s recommended to prioritize insulating your attic and walls for energy efficiency when upgrading your heating system. Your Home Energy Auditor will guide you through this process, considering your home’s heating and cooling needs, existing roof, insulation, and windows, all at no cost to qualifying households.

Consider an Appliance Management Audit to optimize your electrical usage. Your appliances will be assessed for more efficient replacements, and you could receive low-energy light bulbs and other cost-saving measures, all at no expense to you!

Electric Usage

A heat pump increases your electrical usage, but it’s balanced by savings elsewhere, like on propane or oil heating bills. You might decide the added comfort is worth the added energy cost. If you’re adding a heat pump where there was no cooling source before, it will increase your electric use.

Remember To:

Options for Every Type of Home

Air source heat pumps extract heat from outdoor air and transfer it indoors for heating, and reverse the process for cooling. These highly efficient systems could cut heating and cooling costs by up to 30%.
There are both ducted and ductless heat pumps, making them suited for most any home.

Ducted Heat Pumps

Also known as central heat pumps, ducted heat pumps utilize the same duct system as central air conditioners or furnaces. These highly efficient systems are ideal for homes with existing ductwork or for those planning to install ducts.

Ductless Heat Pumps

Often called mini-splits, ductless heat pumps are ideal for homes lacking ductwork or for rooms with inconsistent temperatures. They can effectively replace electric baseboard heating and window air conditioners, as well as less efficient oil or propane heating systems.
